Profiles/Success Stories

Through the events held by the Central New Mexico Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, we are able to provide grants to local organizations who then are able to assist those in need.  Whether they do not have health insurance, or access to services, our grants provide funds to programs geared towards education, screening and treatment.

Here's one success story in which the CNM Affiliate and the NMBCC program were able to help:

I am 55.  I haven't had an exam (mammo or ob/gyn for that matter) in over 15 years.  My left breast had a very sore spot and  I felt a lump.  I have no health-care insurance and cannot afford lab work.  We have no insurance at all and my first thought was that if it was cancer I should just crawl out to the desert and die.  After giving my inner child a swift kick, I looked online by googling, "Free or low cost breast lump checks" and it came up with the Susan G. Komen site.  From there I was referred QUICKLY (within 15 minutes of my e-mail) and the next day had a screening exam through the BCC program here in NM.  That led to a mamogram and ultrasound that showed what appears to be a benign cyst (I have a follow-up for a second opinion as recommended by the doctor who wishes to be certain of the findings for later this month).

I am so relieved to know that there are options to literally save lives thanks to the Susan G.Komen foundation and related co-operatives.  We have donated in the past and always pray for a cure but to see how fast assistance to women in fear was awesome to say the very least.

Thank you,
Kathleen Pfeiffer
