These projects have been selected by our independent Grant Review Panel as those that will have the greatest impact in serving uninsured or underinsured women in our service area. Please note that Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is not a direct service provider. Contact information for the 2011-2012 is provided below each grantee. Grantees welcome calls requesting services.
List of 2011-2012 Community Grant Recipients
The Central New Mexico Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has announced the 2011-2012 Grant Award recipients! We are thrilled to be able to extend grants to these excellent organizations who are dedicated to having a world without breast cancer. Since 1999, the Komen Central New Mexico Affiliate has invested more than $1.3 million to bring breast education, screening and treatment to uninsured, underinsured and underserved women and men of New Mexico. Through the Affiliate’s year-round fund raising efforts, along with our dedicated volunteers, the Komen Central New Mexico Race for the Cure® participants, sponsors and friends, we are making a difference to end breast cancer forever.
Anita Salas Memorial Fund -- $25,000 to provide last-resort financial assistance to low-income, uninsured and underinsured residents in the Central New Mexico Service area who cannot pay for breast cancer care services. These include breast cancer treatment services, diagnostic services, financial assistance for transportation, lodging during treatment, insurance premium assistance and prescriptions.

Christus St. Vincent Hospital Foundation -- $25,000 for the St. Vincent Breast Cancer Care fund to cover the costs of mammograms and other diagnostic services that would be provided in Santa Fe County to women from northern New Mexico who do not have health insurance and whose annual income is 250-350% of the Federal Poverty Level or whose age disqualifies them from other screening programs.

The New Mexico Departments of Health -- $25,000 to expand their breast cancer screening services through the New Mexico Breast and Cervical Cancer program. The grant will provide funding to offer approximately 168 additional screening mammograms to eligible women.

The American Cancer Society, Great Western Division -- $24,966 for the Gift Closet, which addresses the special needs of women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer by meeting some of their concerns about physical well-being and appearance. The grant also assists underserved breast cancer patients by reducing the barriers of transportation costs to treatment and doctors' appointments by providing gas cards.

New Mexico Cancer Center Foundation -- $25,000 to provide resources for low-income breast cancer patients undergoing treatment including non-medical assistance to help maintain their housing, transportation to treatment, day-care, food and utilities. Additionally, the grant provides funds for genetic counseling to raise awareness of breast cancer.

Cancer Institute Foundation -- $25,000 program will significantly improve treatment access for low-income breast cancer patients living in northern New Mexico whose breast cancer diagnosis will require radiation and/or chemotherapy treatments in Santa Fe. YWCA Middle Rio Grande -- $25,000 to provide financial assistance for screening and transportation to women who must travel considerable distance to receive mammograms. The program pays for screening and diagnostic mammograms and ultrasounds and provides personal assistance in finding convenient screening centers and follow-up medical care.
